Harlow Cricket Club

Sports Clubhouses are constructing a new 430 square metre timber frame pavilion for Harlow CC in Essex. The works commenced in the spring of 2016 and will be completed in October 2016.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Harlow Cricket Club has a fantastic reputation for promotion and playing of cricket. Their existing facilities include two pitches and associated cricket nets supported by a pavilion that is rapidly disintegrating. The club boast a thriving youth section that is ever-increasing and the club are struggling to manage this growth in their current pavilion. The club, therefore, worked closely with Sport England and the ECB to put together a new 4-changing room cricket pavilion that would also provide an enlarged clubroom and supporting bar and kitchen facilities. The clubhouse will be situated a new site location in between the two new pitches. A new car park and access will also be constructed as part of the project in order to better support the building and to reduce local disturbances to the adjoining close. The schemewas put together in 2014 and received formal planning approval that year. The successful design then went forward to a competitive tender process but the prices received were well in excess of the available budget (some were double the budget afforded). Sports Clubhouses were approached, following the tender process, to review the plans to date and to work with the club on a turnkey basis to see if the pavilion and associated works could be constructed within the available budget. Following detailed consultation, design review and an extensive value engineering process, a final price was agreed that tied in with the finance available and Sports Clubhouses were formally contracted to undertake construction works in 2016. The new pavilion is being funded by local partners, the ECB and, largely, Sport England. The club would wish to publicly thank all of their funding providers for their assistance and commitment towards the project. The club already play an active part in the local community and this new pavilion will provide a fantastic resource for other community uses which will include the successful musical events currently hosted in the old pavilion by the club.

DESIGN

The new pavilion is being constructed in between the two existing cricket pitches with a new access road and car park accessed off Marigolds. The new car parking will mostly be a porous, permeable hard surface that will minimise any rain water overflow. New boundary
treatments and fencing will help provide an attractive external appearance. The pavilion itself will be clad in a dark-stained timber and red Britmet tiling that will match the local Harlow architectural style. The building is constructed off a screw pile foundation system that is very environmentally friendly as it involves very little muckaway, no concreting and very little damage to the existing soil. The main clubroom space will include a raised ceiling that will provide fantastic volume and character to this community area. Sliding doors will provide access to the playing fields on both sides of the pavilion and excellent viewing of the matches from inside the clubroom.

BUILDING CONTENTS

The pavilion includes 4 ECB-approved changing rooms with associated toilet and shower facilities. The main clubroom provides space for functions, meetings and teas. A bar and kitchen are positioned either side of the function room and they will perfectly serve the players, spectators and visitors to the club. Toilets will be provided and these will, of course, include disabled and baby changing facilities. The building is constructed to comply with modern Building Control regulations which will include ramps and associated access for wheelchair users.
